If you're like most people, your porch or patio is the typical, boring concrete slab. While it is not the most thought of "home improvement", an outdoor rug can add some great character and spice to your porch or patio without being hard on the budget. You could transform that empty canvas that is your porch or patio floor into a scene of vibrant color and life in a matter of seconds with this simple addition!

An outdoor rug, obviously, is more durable, or heavy duty, than it's indoor counterpart. They have to compete with the elements, not to mention more dirt and grime. However, no matter how well built and durable they may be, they are still going to get dirty. The important part is how easily this dirt can be removed to keep your rug looking like new, and how long it will last. Amazingly, an outdoor rug can take a lickin' and keep on tickin', so to speak, and can last through many summers, all while looking great, if it is just cleaned occasionally.

Most of these outdoor rugs are designed for easy cleaning, and don't necessarily have to be cleaned with a carper shampooer. A hose is usually sufficient for cleaning your outdoor rug, and better yet, a pressure washer. Pressure washers can blast all of the dirt off of your rug with ease. Just be sure that it's on the wide stream setting and not the straight blast. Just give it a good blastin' and hang it out to dry in the sun for a bit, and you will be in great shape once again. Maintaining an outdoor rug is most definitely worth the great added touch of decor to your porch or patio.

The addition of an outdoor rug is one of those seemingly small things that makes a big difference. It can change the whole feeling of a boring porch or patio into something with much more life and character.

When on the hunt for a suitable outdoor rug, there are a couple things to look out for. First, you will be able to tell just by the feel of the rug and the materials that it's built with whether or not it will go the distance for you in terms of longevity. Heavy duty and less porous materials typically associated with the outdoors are usually for the best. Also, consider what will match well with the theme of your current decor. You want your outdoor rug to add compliment, not a clash. Finding an outoor rug that matches your decor is a bit more difficult than finding a matching indoor rug since the options are slightly more limited, but there is still an abundance of colors and styles of outdoor rugs out there. There is a beautiful outdoor rug out there that will suit your tastes.

Besides materials and desired use, an indoor and outdoor rug shares many things. First is the price. You can find outdoor rugs for a very wide range of budgets, from 40 dollars to 400 dollars and beyond. A beautiful rug doesn't have to be expensive, however. The primary thing that raises cost in rugs is the complexity of the material used. Of course, you don't want to spring for the cheapest thing available for durability reasons, but there's no reason to go for the most expensive outdoor rug you can find, either.

As far as finding your ideal outdoor rug, most stores that sell interior rugs also sell their outdoor counterparts. As previously stated, the selection may be a bit smaller, but there will still be plenty of rugs to look at. Again, just keep in mind "compliment, not clash". You want a beautiful outdoor rug for the summer season as people are moving the party from the livingroom to the outdoors. If you're doing a patio or porch makeover, an outdoor rug should definitely be a priority in your to-get list. There's nothing else you can do that is so simple yet can add such a burst of color and vibrance to your outdoor hangout.

Hopefully by now, you have a new idea to add some spice to your outdoor decor. An outdoor rug is a beautiful yet simple addition to anyone's home. Who would have thought that something so powerful could be so convenient?

I always used a welcome mat to spice it up on teh patio, but you have a good point that other decor rug could really do the trick.

My sister in law just purchased an outdoor rug for her patio to go with her new adirondack set. I love the look of it. It beats looking at a cement floor or icky astroturf!

I definately think an outdoor rug can be considered home improvement! Some are so beautiful that you would never know they were designed for outdoor use.
