Why use floor rugs to decorate your home?

The purchase of floor rugs is one of the most simple ways to refresh or beautify any room in your house. Floor rugs have the ability to instantly change a room from boring into one bursting with color and character. Floor rugs can also create a point of interest or focal area in a room. You can use floor rugs to create an element of warmth over cold, hard floors. Floor rugs can also be used to protect beautiful yet sensitive hardwood flooring or carpeting. Proper floor rugs can link all of your decor elements together. They are very easy to move around and can offer many different purposes. There is a floor rug right up your alley no matter what room you are searching for. While the carpet in your room is best kept on the neutral side, floor rugs can add colorful seasonal patterns and designs without overdoing your purpose. Also, if you move to a new home, floor rugs can come with you, whereas carpet cannot.

For those who have wooden floors, floor rugs are a great compliment. Proper care for your wood floors can make them last a very long time, and they don't hold allergens like carpet does. They provide an easy to clean surface and a beautiful background for a floor rug. Floor rugs are also great for rooms with carpet. They go great in high traffic areas to preserve carpet, or can link a seating area together. Floor rugs are often also hung from walls to provide a nice display or conversation piece.

Helpful tips for floor rugs

So many people are now looking for floor rugs because of the transition seen in newer style homes from mainly carpet to having mainly hard surface such as tile and hardwood. To go with the seasons, floor rugs can be bought to change a room's look and feel. Floor rugs also give you the ability to make a room inside a room.

Consider these things when going after floor rugs:

  • Using an area rug- How will you apply the floor rug you are buying to your home? Is it's purpose to protect your current surface, or to make more defined areas in your room? Are you trying to warm up your hard floor?
  • Your existing themes or decor- It's important to integrate floor rugs with your existing decor. If the rug is going to be a focal point of a room, maybe you should look for one with a center piece such as a medallion or other point of interest. On the other hand, if you're searching for one for your fire place, find one with a more repetitive pattern without a center focal point. If you have upholstery or wallpaper with ornate patterns, go with a more subtle rug so that you don't overload your room. You should look for colors that compliment, not detract. Not all colors have to match your decor, but it just needs to coordinate with at least a color. A light floor rug will make a more spacious room, and a darker one will add warmth.
  • Mixing patterns- It's fine to use different patterns in one room as long as the colors match one another. Vary the size of rugs as well for contrast.
  • For floor rugs to go under a cofee table, use a 4x6 or 6x9 rug. The table legs should all be positined on the rug. For proper furniture accenting, leave a floor space between the rug and the furniture.
  • For floor rugs to go under a dining room table, go for one that's a minumum of eight feet wide. Chair legs should stay on the rug when people are occupying the table or if a chair is pulled from the table. Just to be safe on size, measure your table (length and width) and add four feet to both of those dimensions.
  • Floor rugs for an entire room should be about 8x11. For a border, leave the same amount of flooring visible all the way around your rug.

With all of this in mind, hopefully you have a new confidence for finding the perfect rug for your home! There's so many great floor rugs out there, so go have a look and see what fits your tastes! Good luck!
