What is an oriental rug?

A true oriental rug is a handmade rug and is either knotted with pile or woven without pile. Any rug that is manufactured by a machine by hand tufting or in any way besides hand-knotting or weaving is considered to not be an authentic oriental rug.

An oriental rug usually comes from a geographic region running from China in the east, Iran in the west, Caucasus in the north, and India in the south. Many different people of many different cultures, religions and faiths are involved in the making of oriental rugs.

In eastern life, an oriental rug serves as much more than just a decoration. These rugs, when in their native settings, cover the floor, the divans, and are nearly the only furniture other than octogonal tables in some regions.  An oriental rug serves as the ceiling, the wall paper, and the designs have always been aimed at doing what a painting or etching would do on our walls over here in the west.

Why an Oriental Rug?

Oriental rugs are some of the finest made rugs you can buy. Any true oriental rug is hand made, typically of the finest wool material, and the complexity of the design is almost always impressive. One can always look at a true oriental rug and appreciate the hours and hours of hand work that went into it. The appreciation factor is always a top reason for buying an oriental rug over other rugs.

An oriental rug goes great with any decor as long as the primary colors of the oriental rug and your current decor do not clash. The rug will add compliment to the entire room and surely be a great conversation piece when company comes over. A beautiful oriental rug can outline an area in a room or be used in higher traffic areas to preserve your flooring. Also, consider an oriental rug to put on hard floors to create warmth. A rug is much nicer to step on than a cold, hard floor in the morning!

When looking for an oriental rug, make sure that it is of good quality so that it will be able to withstand the test of time. Going cheap may look good at first, but the rug 1. Probably isn't a real hand crafted oriental rug and 2. Will more than likely fall apart in short order. A quality oriental rug will last for years and years of enjoyment with great beauty.

An oriental rug should be considered for any home, as there are so many sizes, colors, and designs out there. There are rugs out there that will satisfy everyone's tastes! Get to it!

Oriental rugs are so freaking amazing and soft. I love them. My mom has them all over her house.
